Reverend Walter James (Jimmy) Whelchel, IIl is a native of Gainesville, GA. He is the son of Reverend Eugene (Lena) Whelchel and Mrs. Margie (Charles) Watson. He is the grandson of Reverend W.L. (Rebekah) Whelchel. He received his early education in the Hall County School System and later graduated from Piedmont College in Demorest, GA where he obtained a B.A. in Sociology. Reverend Whelchel is presently an employee of the Gainesville City School System where he is employed as the Behavioral Specialist for Gainesville Middle School.
Reverend Whelchel enthusiastically serves the Lord and His people. He hails from a family of preachers and has been trained to love and serve God, meet His people where they are, love in spite of, and be obedient to the word of God. He has pastored at Israel CME in Cornelia, GA, Norman Grove CME in Elberton, GA, and Melvin Hill CME in Carnesville, GA. Presently he serves as the pastor of his home church, Hickory Grove CME in Dahlonega, GA. The church serves as a beacon of light to all who enters.
As Reverend Whelchel continues on the path of God in ministry, he has the privilege of enjoying the companionship of his wife, Rhonda Blackwell-Whelchel. They were married August 15, 1993 at the very church he now pastors. They have three wonderful kids: Walter James Whelchel, IV, Katelyn Danielle Whelchel, and Milton Thomas Whelchel. Reverend and Mrs. Whelchel are anxiously awaiting their first grandchild, Kylee Rose Watson.
Reverend Whelchel is on fire for God and ignites that same zeal in those he serves and encounters. His passion for God is addictive. He invites all who will to the "little white church" on the hill where he adamantly believes the words of one of his member's brother who said, "This church is sitting on a keg of spiritual dynamite waiting to explode!" Reverend Whelchel expresses his love to you all and carries the motto: A church that is ALIVE is worth the DRIVE. Our doors swing on WELCOME HINGES.
